Sample Answer:

Capital punishment, also known as the death penalty, has been a controversial topic for many years. There are strong arguments both for and against it, and the debate continues to rage on. In my opinion, I firmly believe that capital punishment should be abolished for several reasons.

First and foremost, the justice system is not infallible, and there have been numerous cases of wrongful convictions. In the event that an innocent person is put to death, there is no way to right that wrong. The irreversible nature of capital punishment means that any mistakes made cannot be rectified. This in itself is a compelling reason to do away with the death penalty.

Furthermore, the death penalty does not act as a deterrent to crime. Studies have shown that the threat of execution does not deter criminals from committing heinous acts. Instead, it perpetuates a cycle of violence and retribution, rather than addressing the root causes of crime and seeking to rehabilitate offenders.

Additionally, the death penalty is often applied in a discriminatory manner, with marginalized and minority groups disproportionately affected. This raises serious concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the justice system. It is unjust for certain groups to be targeted for capital punishment at a higher rate than others.

In conclusion, I am firmly opposed to capital punishment and believe that it should be abolished. The risk of executing innocent individuals, the lack of deterrence, and the discriminatory application of the death penalty are all compelling reasons to do away with this outdated and inhumane practice.
